Fused Silica, Fused Quartz, & Borosilicate, (Q) What is Silica Glass or fused silica? (A) Silica Glass is a generic term used to describe "both" fused quartz (made by melting natural quartz crystals) and silica glass (created through a synthetic chemical process). Both forms provide an exceptional range of properties including: Very low expansion coefficient, Broad transparency range from deep ultraviolet to near infrared, High corrosion resistance, High temperature capability, And best of all for us cutters, great transparent inexpensive faceting material, usually flawless in laser varieties, and slight gas type inclusions in ornamental varieties. (Q) What is Borosilicate? (A) Borosilicate is optical glass used in laser applications, usualy clear, also it is the hardest of the Silica Glasses, a full 7, where as Silica may be a hardness of 5.5 & Fused Qtz. 5.5 to 6.5 (Q) What is Fused Quartz? (A) Discription: This material is harder than silica glass, but not as hard as Hydrothermal Qtz.. This is due to the fact that the material is melted and poured into bars, rather than being grown. As a result of this method, some material may contain tiny gas inclusions, but most are not visable to the un-aided eye. The ones that are can be removed by trimming pryor to, or during cutting. Advantages, Disadvantages: While Fused Qtz., is not as hard as "Hydrothermal Qtz", it comes in a much wider range of colors, offering cutters many more choices than its Hydrothermal cousin, also is very easy to cut, and takes as good high polish. |
